PASTOR KATHY’S REFLECTIONS
The September 17th Community Car Show was an exciting event, despite the cold chill and scattered rain! What a celebration of collaboration, coordination, and cooperation! Over 80 community partners participated; $3,383.69 was raised on 9/17; and more money is being added as community contributions continue to be received through October 2. Due to the weather challenges, the large, beautifully decorated solid pine birdhouse built by Bud Dibben's and decorated by SUMC children will be auctioned at the SUMC ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER AND PIE AUCTION at 5:00 PM on Sunday, October 2. Please join us for this unique and joyous time of fellowship and an “extended” opportunity to support the tornado recovery efforts. Also, the small, hand-decorated “Hope Houses” created by the SUMC Youth group are on sale for $5 and may be purchased any time.
On Saturday morning, October 22, SUMC will serve as one of the sites for our district’s annual multi-church Charge Conferences. About seven churches will be sending delegations of 8 -10 persons representing each respective church’s administrative council. Steve Cox, our District Superintendent, will facilitate the meeting. In preparation of this annual event, the SUMC nomination committee chaired by Ron Mast will be overseeing the process to fill any vacancies in our church committees and work groups. Also, beginning in 2012, the administrative council has approved the transition to an alternate administrative council format defined in the United Methodist Book of Discipline. This new format offers churches an opportunity to streamline the decision-making process for administrative issues while maintaining the opportunity for Trustees, Finance, and Staff Parish Relations representatives to meet, as needed, to process more complex challenges before referring the challenge to the expanded administrative council. Please keep our elected church leaders in your prayers as we move forward in this exciting direction that promotes good stewardship of time and talents.
If you are interested in joining and serving on the following work teams in 2012, please contact Ron Mast: Outreach (greet and visit with visitors on Sunday morning and home visits); Hospitality (coordinate and host the fellowship time after the worship service); Audio Visual (prepare and run the visual resources for worship and special events); and Kitchen (oversee the coordination of the kitchen resources). Three-year appointments may be needed for the Mission Committee. We continue to be in need of a Sunday School Teacher for our 7th – 12th grade youth: this person will be asked to attend quarterly Education Committee meetings. Please prayerfully consider sharing and growing your God-given talents and skills by serving in the leadership and joining in the fellowship of this wonderful church. I hope to see you on CELEBRATION SUNDAY on October 16th as we highlight and celebrate the education, growth, and fellowship opportunities offered at this time at SUMC. Small church, big God!
Shalom,
Pastor Kathy

Words from your Lay Leader-
Sharon Fairlie
One of my meditations this morning was about giving a belated gift of appreciation. The emphasis was on timing, reiterating that actions of appreciation or thanks are never too late to be given. In fact the author said that even though her gift was late, the recipient called and said it came at a time when she needed a lift.
This month will be Celebration Sunday in the form of the Feast of the Booths. We will have a pot luck dinner after our church service which is alone plenty to celebrate. But on display around the Great Room will be tri-folds, or booths describing various small groups in our church. This will be a way for the entire congregation to see the many areas where our members serve. It will also be an opportunity as a congregation, to show our appreciation and to consider being a participant in one or more of the groups in the coming year. It will be an excellent opportunity for us to say ‘Thank You’ or ask questions.
In a way, being a part of one or more small groups in the church is a gift of appreciation. It allows us to practice what God has called us to do, serve others. The 10th anniversary of September 11 was all about honoring those who lost their lives in service to others. The Missouri United Methodists chose that day for service to others – Serve 2011 – and SUMC chose to serve a meal at Grand Avenue Temple and to pick up trash along Highway 169 on that day as our way of serving God.
We are a giving outwardly focused church with many gifted and talented people. Take this opportunity to find a place where you can serve; serve God in the capacity of small group participation or teaching, serve God by getting involved in some way. The Time and Talent sheet is on one of the tables in the Great Room. Check it out…..God has a place for you here at SUMC. And it would be an appreciation gift to Him for you to serve. It is never too late.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7 “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord, and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activated all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
