Celebrating Life through Divine Worship

All Saints Sunday

Communion Sunday

November 6, 2011

The time of centering:

All that we have is the Lord’s.  The earth is his – oceans and mountains, sun and rain – life itself.  All that we are comes from God and, as his people, we are shaped by the working of his Holy Spirit among us.  All that we give is the Lord’s.  We are only stewards, returning what is rightfully His. In giving us himself through his Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, we are rich beyond measure.  Let us worship the Lord, whose children we are.

CALL TO WORSHIP                                                 by Safiyah Fosua
LEADER: We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshiped you:
PEOPLE: Whether in brush arbors or cathedrals, weathered wooden churches or crumbling cement meeting houses where your name was lifted and adored.
LEADER: We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise:
PEOPLE: Manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil,
strong hands and those gnarled with age.  Holy hands used as wave offerings across the land.
LEADERWe thank you, God, for hardworking saints;
PEOPLE: Whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, head ragged or aproned, blue-collared or three-piece-suited. They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.
LEADER: Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us.
AllBless the memories of your saints, God. May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.  Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

PASTORGod in Christ breaks down the walls that make us strangers to ourselves and divide us from one another.  We are the body of Christ.  Around this table, we enact our faith.  The body broken is restored to wholeness; lifeblood poured out brings healing to the world.

RECEIVING THE SACREMENT OF COMMUNION

Unison Prayer after Communion

ALL:  Eternal God, you have called your people from east and west and north and south to feast at the table of Jesus Christ. By the power of your Holy Spirit keep us faithful to your will. Go with us to the streets, our homes, and our places of labor and leisure, that whether we are gathered or scattered, we may be the servant church of the servant Christ.  Amen.

INVOCATION                            by Bishop Robert Schnase

“Giving is central to Jewish and Christian practice because people perceive God as extravagantly generous, the giver of every good gift, the source of life and love. People give because they serve a giving God.  Every sanctuary and chapel in which we have worshiped, every church organ that has lifted our spirits, every pew where we have sat, every communion rail where we have knelt, every hymnal from which we have sung, every praise band that has touched our hearts, every church classroom where we have gathered with our friends, every church kitchen that has prepared our meals, every church van that has taken us to camp, every church camp cabin where we have slept – all are the fruit of someone's Extravagant Generosity. We have been the recipients of grace upon grace. We are the heirs, the beneficiaries of those who came before us who were touched by the generosity of Christ enough to give graciously so that we could experience the truth of Christ for ourselves.”

Let us worship our generous God.

Let us remember those who loved and served before us.

Guide us as we create our stories of love and service. Amen

Dear Friends:  You are invited to participate in a small group meeting to celebrate your participation in the life of Smithville United Methodist Church, pre-view the SUMC planned ministries for 2012, and see the church’s “ministry story” presented in the form of a narrative budget.

Please sign up to attend one of the following VISIONING MEETINGS:

Wednesday, Nov. 9th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Sunday, Nov. 13th from 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Tuesday, Nov. 15th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Wednesday, Nov. 16th from 10:00 - 11:30 am

Each small group meeting is designed for about 15 persons.  Sign-up sheets are in the Great Room.  You may also call the church office to sign-up.   If you are unable to participate in any of the four meeting times at the church, please contact Ginger, Sharon or me.

Participation by each member of the SUMC church family is important:  your participation is important!

Please mark Sunday, November 20th.  This is Stewardship Sunday and we will celebrate Thanksgiving with an all-church Potluck Dinner.

These are exciting days for Smithville United Methodist Church.  Please pray for the church leadership as we all seek discernment for doing God’s ministry during 2012 and beyond.

Blessings, Pastor Kathy
