Celebrating Life through Divine Worship

October 30, 2011

The time of centering:

All that we have is the Lord’s.  The earth is his – oceans and mountains, sun and rain – life itself.  All that we are comes from God and, as his people, we are shaped by the working of his Holy Spirit among us.  All that we give is the Lord’s.  We are only stewards, returning what is rightfully His. In giving us himself through his Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, we are rich beyond measure.  Let us worship the Lord, whose children we are.

PRELUDE                                    Worship begins as the music is played

ENTRANCE OF THE LIGHT

INVOCATION                                          by Bishop Kenneth L. Larder

Stewardship begins with a gifting God who owns everything and who is present in the world as grace.  Stewardship is our vocation to share in God’s mission of compassion, generosity, and justice.  Stewardship is an expression of love for God and neighbor.  Stewardship requires simplifying living by choosing necessities for everyone over excess for a few.   Come let us worship our generous, loving God!  Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP
LEADER: Blessed God, thank you for your abundance and faithfulness to us in
times of plenty and in times of need. Your goodness and generosity
overflow everywhere. How great is our God!

PEOPLE: With grateful hearts, we thank you.

LEADER: Through your grace, given to us in Jesus Christ, we respond to your      goodness, mindful of our church's needs, but more from hearts of love so that you can accomplish your work through us in this world.

PEOPLE: We love you because you first loved us.

LEADER:  We are living in days of great financial challenges and stress, and the economic foundations of many have been shaken. Give us the wisdom and courage to keep our eyes on our needs, not on our wants, and to measure our giving according to your purposes for our lives.

PEOPLE: Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Give us the grace to put these words into practice.

LEADER: We live not for ourselves but for you alone and to help others in need. Open our eyes, hearts and resources to respond to the opportunities to serve others as did Christ.

All:           We commit ourselves again to be good, wise and generous steward of your gifts.  Amen.

UNISON PRAYER

O God, our Giver of Life, sometimes we have a hard time putting you first. We read ads, hear commercials, and see tempting bargains on television and the internet. We want the clothes, the power tools, the games, the big screen TVs.  We like to give, God, but only when our stomachs are full and our wants are fulfilled.  Forgive us, we pray.  Teach us to respond to your love with generosity to your church and to your world.  Give us the wisdom and courage to be good stewards.   Amen.
