Celebrating Life through Divine Worship
Epiphany Sunday
10:00 AM, January 2, 2011
The time of centering: Holy God, in this season that commemorates the life and ministry of Jesus, remind us that His ministry is always and ever actively reaching out toward us. And in this hour of worship, help us to be open to the challenges of his words, the power of his healing, and the opportunity to labor alongside him as both Savior and friend. Amen.
PRELUDE - As the music begins, our worship service begins.
ENTRANCE OF THE LIGHT
INVOCATION
The magi came from many places, following a star. We come to worship, and the star sheds light on our lives. The magi brought gifts to offer the child. We too bring gifts – ourselves, our hopes, our dreams. Shepherds and magi – the meek and the mighty – all were welcome in Bethlehem. We too come to Bethlehem to see God revealed to the world!
WELCOME

CALL US TOGETHER
LEADER: Although the beckoning star heeded by wise travelers long ago no longer leads the way,
PEOPLE: The manger-born Christ is still to be found and followed.
LEADER: We are not brought to our knees in surprise as were those journeyers of old,
PEOPLE: Yet our desire to worship can be as deep as theirs.
LEADER: And though we do not bear gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh,
PEOPLE: We offer ourselves and what we have.
LEADER: The story continues. The good news abounds. There is a living Christ to discover and worship and serve.
ALL: Let us rejoice and be glad!

ALL: Guiding God. Bless us on the road we have chosen to seek your star. Light-shedding God, light up our minds with your truth that lets us ignore the bad-news-Herods and keep going toward that certain glow in the sky of our lives. Beckoning God, help us to bring gifts worthy of the Christ. Then, we too shall be known as wise women and men. We pray in Christ’s name. Amen.

BENEDICTION
May the wisdom of the wise men set you in motion on a quest of God’s ever-newborn Son. May their gifts inspire in you a spirit of giving and self-giving – not just in this season but all the days of your life. May your pilgrim trek be lighted, like theirs, by a special star – to keep you going when you are weary and to assure you that God is with you, always. Go in Peace! Amen.

AD COUNCIL MEETING
The Ad Council meeting will be today, January 2 at 4:00 pm. This is a reschedule from last weekend because of the Christmas holiday.
THE UN-HANGING OF THE GREEN
Epiphany Sunday, when we commemorate the arrival of the magi to worship Jesus, is on Jan. 2nd. Then, on Monday evening, from 5 to 8 pm on Jan. 3rd we will take down the Christmas decorations and store them for another year. Please come for a time of fun, fellowship and reflection. Bring a crock-pot of soup to share for our supper. There will be activities for young children.
NUMANA
Saturday, January 8th
A team of approximately 20 people from Smithville UMC will be working with NUMANA and several area churches to package meals on Saturday, January 8th. The United Methodist Men's group will be serving breakfast that morning here at the church for the volunteers at 8:00 am. NUMANA provides meals to countries that are in need of help. We will be packaging meals for Haiti. This is a great community service project. It is super simply to do and a lot of fun as well. The location will be at the Lewis and Clark Elementary School, 1407 Nashua, Liberty, MO, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This is really a great project and a great way to start your New Year. If you have any questions please contact Kerry Winan at 816-665-8261.

The Cornerstone class is sponsoring the annual retreat at Wilderness Camp the weekend of January 14-16th. It is a time of study, relaxation, reflection, food, movies, music and fellowship. It is a family event, so everyone is welcome. We share meal preparation (and cleanup!) and planning. For information please Lee or Cindy Hunold. The retreat starts Friday late afternoon and runs through Sunday noon.
